Woman escapes going up in flames

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department helped to contain a domestic dispute that could have ended in tragedy.

Elijah Lanier, 24, was arrested Sept. 5 and charged with aggravated assault, obstruction of an officer, and possession of tools for the commission of a crime.

The incident started Thursday afternoon when 911 got a domestic in progress call in the New Hope Landing subdivision, said Sheriff Barry Babb.

As the department arrived, Lanier has poured gas on his girlfriend and her car and threatened to set everything on fire. Lanier fled the scene on foot and tried to get in New Hope Baptist Church. The Sheriff’s Department caught him after a short foot chase and transported him to the jail.
