Wildfire spreads in Spalding Co. near Town of Brooks

The wildfire spreading in northern Spalding County seems to have started here on West Ellis Road. Winds were pushing it toward Griffin and away from the nearby Fayette County town of Brooks. (Staff photo by Danny Harrison)

A wildfire engulfed hundreds of acres of rural field and forest just south of the Town of Brooks Monday. The fire was being attacked by the Spalding County Fire Department from its origin on West Ellis Road.

Spalding fire officials were unavailable for comment late Monday afternoon, but based on what can be seen from West Ellis Road, it appears the fire started there by the road and spread in a southeastern direction aided by swift winds.

Fayette County fire officials were saying around 500 acres were involved in the wildfire that was spreading in the opposite direction from the Town of Brooks, which is located just inside the Fayette County border.
