image1While many high school students were spending their vacations relaxing at home, one local student was getting involved in the political process. Sicily Stanton, a senior at Whitewater High School, was one of 67 pages selected to represent every US state and territory at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
Selected after shining through an extremely competitive application process that required essays and recommendations from state congressmen, Stanton got to join some of the nation’s best and brightest.
Pages had a wide range of duties, including community service, program preparation, and distribution of materials to delegates on the convention floor. They were also exposed to a number of cultural opportunities like hearing the Cleveland Symphonic Orchestra, touring Cleveland’s Playhouse Theater, meeting with a professor from Harvard’s institute of politics, and working with a  local clothing drive.
“It was definitely a huge honor to be accepted into the page program and a very unique opportunity,” said Stanton.
For an aspiring journalist like Stanton, the experience was especially gratifying. She got to speak with journalists from CNN, The Wall Street Journal, Fox, and ABC and picked up advice on how to follow their career path. The biggest highlight came from getting to speak with Katie Couric and discuss her experiences breaking into the field and becoming a respected journalist.
For a student with such ambition, it could be just her first taste of the national stage. After graduation from Whitewater, watch out world!
