The Whitewater boys’ soccer team defeated Starr’s Mill 2-1 (4-2 on Penalties) on Feb. 4 in a penalty shootout to decide the winner of the Southside Charity Classic.
The match was tied through 90 minutes, with both sides seeing one goal in regulation. Whitewater goalkeeper Cade Spurlock showed his class throughout the night, stopping a number of attempts from a well-conditioned Starr’s Mill side.
Whitewater senior Ian Brunet opened up the scoring in the match on a breakaway run and shot that was deflected by Starr’s Mill goalie Marcelo Quinones-Vilela before landing in the back of the net.
The Panthers responded quickly, moving the ball down the pitch and executing a perfect cross into the box where junior Ali Othman headed the ball into the back of the net.
