Walter E. Gibson

Mr. Walter E. Gibson passed peacefully in Fayetteville, GA on March 30, 2016. Mr. Gibson, a long-time resident of Union City, GA, was born on September 16, 1917 to the late Walter Murrah and Daisy Adelia Gibson.  He was in the class of 1935 at Campbell High School in Fairburn, GA.  After graduation, he began a long career with American Freight Systems.  During World War II, Mr. Gibson served in the 391st Signal Company for the Army Air Force in Italy and Africa.  He was also recently honored as a veteran by the City of Fayetteville and First Baptist Church of Fayetteville.  Mr. Gibson was an accomplished carpenter and an avid gardener.  Even in his late 90’s he found joy in growing tomatoes and sunflowers in the garden he maintained at Azalea Estates in Fayetteville, GA.  He was also active in the Men’s Fellowship Class at First Baptist Church of Fayetteville.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Rebecca H. Gibson; and two sons, 1st Lt. Walter M. Gibson and Edward Glenn Gibson Sr.  Survivors include sister, Mrs Thelma Buch of Hackettstown, NJ; grandchildren, Glenn and Lauren Gibson of Woodstock, and MAJ Marc and Erin Melton of Midland, GA; great-grandson, Owen Gibson of Woodstock; great-granddaughter Briana Melton of Midland; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Rev. Glenn Stringham officiating.  Interment will immediately follow the service at Westview Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 5:00 PM on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Azalea Estates Garden Fund in memory of W.E. Gibson at 105 Autumn Glen Circle, Fayetteville, GA 30215.
