The offensive Price family

Jack Bernard, a retired SVP with a large national healthcare firm, has worked extensively with hospitals across the nation regarding cost containment and insurance. He was also the first Director of Health Planning for the state of Georgia.

The 50th anniversary of the murder of MLK Jr. was a time for all of us to think about equality and striving to have America reach its potential as a beacon of freedom and morality in an uncertain world. Martin Luther King Jr. was a remarkable man, epitomizing the best of Georgians and Americans in general, holding a torch in the dark night of the 1960s.
I cannot say the same for some other Georgians, specifically the Price family of physicians, Betty and Tom. Both of them have gone out of their way to trample progress and to extinguish the light of hope for the powerless.
On October 17, Dr. Betty Price said,“I don’t want to say the quarantine word, but I guess I just said it,” in regard to reducing the spread of HIV in Georgia. I thought educated people, physicians no less, were more intelligent than that, but I suppose bigotry is stronger than IQ.
I was the first Director of Health Planning for Georgia and then was an executive with hospital corporations. When I was working in Houston in the 1980s, there was public discussion about AIDS/HIV patients being segregated in their own hospital. Thankfully, cooler, less bigoted heads prevailed.
Rep. Betty Price was not joking when she suggested segregating HIV patients. Looking at the transcript, one can see that she was deadly serious.
Taking a cue from her husband’s former boss, President Trump, when she was caught she said she was just being sarcastic. I do not believe Trump when he says that, and I certainly do not believe her.
“Sarcasm” is just an inadequate excuse to bail them out of trouble, plausible (implausible?) deniability. Per the AJC, Betty subsequently stated at a Fulton County GOP meeting that the Democratic Party caused “their women to have higher testosterone levels than many of their men.” Further, when asked recently why she opposed doubling fines for people caught texting while driving, she also stated, “I’m just causing trouble. I’m not philosophically opposed. I’m just mad.”
However, Rep. Betty Price is not the first offensive person in the Price family to be in the Georgia legislature. Her husband, a Michigan native, was a State Senator and vehemently opposed removing the Confederate flag from the state flag, among other outrageous things.
We should not be surprised at her backtracking, in that being disingenuous runs in the family. Her husband is that well known evader of the truth, and abuser of public funds, Tom Price.
In January 2016 during Senate confirmation hearings, Price said: A. He was “offended,” seeing no problem with buying stock in a firm he was helping legislatively; B. He saw no issue with him, a physician, opposing stronger tobacco regulations or owning stock in tobacco companies; and C. He wants “every American to have access” to and “financial feasibility” for healthcare.
On this latter point, he failed to make clear his definition of access. He meant you should be able to spend your own money to buy a policy, even if it was unaffordable for you without any governmental assistance, which he vehemently opposed.
As a Congressman, Price had constantly criticized the Obama administration and Democrats for wasting money,”Reckless spending habits employed by Democrats in Washington are driving the debt,” (2011). However, he decided that it was just fine for him as DHHS Secretary to be using private planes to run around the country and the world. He was just too good to use commercial planes like the downtrodden hoy ploy.
His abuse cost you and I nearly $1 million in public expenditures paid for through our taxes. His gracious response was to offer to pay back $52,000, and he never apologized for his outrageous hypocrisy. By the way, Price is worth $13.6 million, much of it obtained when he was a state and federal legislator. You can surmise how.
Of course, even after the scandal, Price has landed on his feet. It seems as though wealthy hypocrites like him always do. He has joined the advisory board of Jackson Healthcare, a technology and staffing firm here in Georgia.
Dr. Betty Price and Dr. Tom Price are clearly the perfect couple. Who ever said opposites attract?
