Updated: Teen pedestrian fatally injured by Hood Avenue vehicle

STORY UPDATED 1:45 P.M.

Fayetteville Police are investigating a Saturday morning collision on Hood Avenue that involved a Mazda pickup truck and two pedestrians, one of whom has since died from her injuries.

Public Information Officer Mike Whitlow said a 42-year-old female was driving the pickup truck along Hood Avenue at 9:37 a.m. and swerved when she neared two female pedestrians, who were walking along the shoulder of the road. He said the vehicle “glanced” an elderly female but hit the 16-year-old “head-on”. The teenager was transported with serious injuries to an area hospital where she died.

Whitlow said the driver fled the scene but was soon apprehended by Fayette County Sheriff deputies. The driver thus far is being charged with DUI Drugs and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. Other charges may filed at a later time.

The names of the driver and pedestrians were not being released as of early Saturday afternoon.
