Starr’s Mill knocked out by New Hampstead

Starr’s Mill’s memorable season ended on Friday night. The Panthers were on the wrong side of history as the New Hampstead Phoenix marched to a 21-10 victory en route to their first-ever state playoff win.

The Phoenix (5-5) put up 254 total yards and propelled into the second round of the playoffs. Senior quarterback Deyandre Ruffin led the way by completing 9 of 21 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown. He also gained 81 yards on the ground. The Phoenix travel to face Stockbridge next week.

Starr’s Mill defeats Riverdale to win third straight region title

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Starr’s Mill head coach Chad Phillips gathered his team and celebrated. He beamed with a wide smile and hugged anyone near him. Phillips watched his players get serenaded by the school’s fight song and it hit him that the Panthers had just won the Region 3-AAAAA crown again.

“There is just a culture that kids expect to win and half the battle is getting them to believe they can win,” Phillips said. “I am just real excited for the boys.”

Starr’s Mill takes Battle of Bubble series against McIntosh

Starr’s Mill continued to showcase their dominant pitching rotation against McIntosh on Friday night.

In the rubber game of the Battle of the Bubble series, the Panthers turned to ace Dawson Sweatt to face the rival Chiefs. The Auburn commit didn’t disappoint as he threw a one-hitter en route to a 2-0 Panthers win.

McIntosh wins 1-0 to even series with Starr’s Mill

Pitching continued to be the overarching theme in the three-game series between McIntosh and Starr’s Mill.

On Thursday night, fans were treated to another veteran pitching matchup between to experienced upperclassmen. The Chiefs sent senior Connor Koscevic to the mound to duel against Panthers senior Nathan Price.

Both pitchers didn’t disappoint as they matched each other all night. Price was sharp early as he retired 10 of the first 13 batters to face him. Koscevic was just as good as he posted a career-best performance.

Late home run seals Starr’s Mill win over McIntosh

In the sixth inning, Starr’s Mill pitcher Hayes Heinecke was jolted by a familiar sound. As he ran towards the dugout railing, a wide smile came across his face.  Just as the crowd started to roar, he knew exactly what happened.

His teammate and good friend Mitchell Sutton crushed a 3-1 fastball over the left field wall. The home run broke the seal of a scoreless tie with McIntosh and gave Heinecke a chance to be the pitcher of record.

Starr’s Mill finishes off sweep of Whitewater

Starr’s Mill hosted a pitching clinic against rival Whitewater during the squads three-game series this week.

The Panthers dominated the Wildcats on the mound and got three superb starts from its pitching staff. They held Whitewater to just one unearned run through 24 innings and sealed the series sweep with an 8-1 victory on Friday night.

As the basketball season begins to slowly come to a close, teams are starting to jockey for position in region standings in hopes of capturing a region championship. This was the case Friday night, when the Starr’s Mill Panthers traveled to the Fayette County Tigers where both the girls and boys teams currently sit as the top front runners in the region.

Fayette County government leaders seek input regarding Starr’s Mill

Should the historic and iconic Starr’s Mill be turned into public meeting space, perhaps hosting art exhibits and more frequent history tours, or should it be left completely alone as it is now and opened only on rare occasions for Fayette County Historical Society events?

Or perhaps you have other ideas. Now is the time to share those with Fayette County government officials, as they say they are certainly looking to make at least small improvements to the mill- and waterfall-centered property, while they say they want to be sensitive (more…)
