Sandy Creek holds off Whitewater in thriller

Sandy Creek rolled into Friday’s primetime matchup against Whitewater looking for a fresh start. After suffering a non-region loss to rival Fayette County earlier in the week, the Patriots needed to win to build confidence early in the season.

Whitewater provided a unique challenge as a young and upstart program. Under new head coach Matt Martin, the Wildcats hung tough with the Patriots for 32 minutes. However, Sandy Creek prevailed 63-58 en route to their first victory of the season.

Senior duo TJ Bickerstaff and RJ Howard led the charge for the Patriots. Bickerstaff collected 20 points, 10 rebounds, 6 (more…)

North Oconee took advantage of a muffed punt and two interceptions in the third quarter to build a 27-0 lead, and the Titans defeated Sandy Creek 27-8 in the opening game of the Class AAAA state tournament.

“[The defense] played unreal. Our coaching staff has done a good job all year of putting a plan together that gives us opportunities to make plays. To see those kids go out and execute and make the plays they did tonight, it adds more confidence to that side of the ball,” said Titans head coach Tyler Aurandt. “The (more…)

Sandy Creek falls late to Cartersville at home

Sandy Creek Patriots head coach Brett Garvin took a minute before addressing his players. As he looked in the distance, the looming scoreboard told the story. Seven points separated Patriots and the No. 4 ranked Cartersville Purple Hurricanes. One touchdown gave Cartersville a 7-0 victory.

Once the team gathered at the 10-yard line, Garvin began his usual postgame huddle. Before he concluded his speech, he looked at each of his players and announced that he was proud of them.

On Friday night, the Patriots proved they are an elite team in Class AAAA. They went toe-to-toe with one of the (more…)

It was homecoming at Sandy Creek High School as the Patriots welcomed the Troup County Tigers to town. Patriots alumni old and new arrived to see the marquee matchup in Region 5-AAAA.

Local media outlets, Channel 2 and Fox 5, were also in attendance to showcase the contest as the Game of the Week. However, an hour weather delay put a damper on things as Sandy Creek washed away a chance at victory.

Sandy Creek falls 52-51 in Final Four heartbreaker

Sandy Creek was one play away from dethroning the Class AAAA defending champs, the Upson-Lee Knights, on Friday night.

After having the Knights on the ropes all game, it came down to the final 9.4 seconds in regulation. The Patriots were down a point and had left everything on the floor. They just needed one more shot at history.

Patriots’ junior forward TJ Bickerstaff was entrusted with the last shot. In the waning moments, Bickerstaff drove around a high screen and roll to get to one of his favorite spots on the floor. As he gathered into his shooting motion, (more…)

Sandy Creek splits Sweet 16 matchups

Sandy Creek continued its redemption odyssey through the Class AAAA state tournament with a 73-52 win over the Stephens County Indians on Thursday night. However, it wasn’t easy considering the magnitude of hosting a Sweet 16 game at home.

Despite a raucous crowd, the Patriots started the game slow and out of sync. They failed to create ball movement, secure rebounds and play as a unit. After a quick 5 points from senior Jarred Godfrey, the Patriots found themselves in an early hole.

Stephens County was more aggressive and battered Sandy Creek inside with sheer strength. Senior power forward De’Undra (more…)

Sandy Creek three-star defensive end Nick Fulwider is heading west to continue his football journey.

The senior signed with the University of Arkansas on Friday after deciding to de-commit from the University of North Carolina in early December. He became the eighth recruit in Arkansas’ 2017 recruiting class and the second Patriot to sign during the NCAA early signing period.

“It’s amazing and I really do love the fan base,” Fulwider said. “Everything is right where it needs to be.”

Fulwider admits that the main reason for the recruiting flip came down to educational opportunities. He aspires to be a (more…)
