Should the historic and iconic Starr’s Mill be turned into public meeting space, perhaps hosting art exhibits and more frequent history tours, or should it be left completely alone as it is now and opened only on rare occasions for Fayette County Historical Society events?

Or perhaps you have other ideas. Now is the time to share those with Fayette County government officials, as they say they are certainly looking to make at least small improvements to the mill- and waterfall-centered property, while they say they want to be sensitive (more…)

Tax commission candidate’s claims turn out to be completely false

dawodu-mailer
Tax commissioner candidate Rasheed Dawodu’s campaign mailer suggests he has the experience and training to be tax commissioner while also stating that Kristie King, who has been a deputy tax commissioner for five years, does not.

Twice before now, we at this newspaper have reported that at least some of what Fayette County Tax Commissioner candidate Rasheed Dawodu has claimed on the campaign trail this year has turned out to be false, and now we’ve discovered that more of those claims are also false.

As well, Dawodu’s campaign has recently mailed out a flyer that contains even more factual errors (more…)

Kenny Melear, one of Fayette’s most well-known community leaders, passed away Thursday morning. He was 86.

A Fayetteville resident for more than half a century, Melear, a Newnan native, moved to town after establishing his already-successful Melear’s Barbecue restaurant. Melear and his barbecue house would become landmarks for the South Atlanta region. When national politicians visited the area, they made sure to have their picture taken at Melear’s.

When Georgia Congressman Newt Gingrich was installed as speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in 1995, Melear and a few of his friends, including current Fayetteville City (more…)

Two weeks from now, we will know who our next district attorney, Third District congressman, and 73rd District state representative will be.

According to our friends at the Fayette County Elections Office, about a hundred folks a day have been dropping by to vote early at their one location (inside the elections office), even though some ballots, depending on which congressional and state house districts you live in, only have one race on them in which to vote. But everybody in Fayette, Spalding, Pike, and Upson counties get to vote in the same district attorney race between assistant (more…)

Yeah, me, too.

It was all part of the “Toyota Road Trips” campaign, and the regional Toyota folks were kind enough to drop a dark-gray RAV4 off at my doorstep one recent Wednesday morning. Eight days later, I felt genuinely sad to say “goodbye” to that (more…)
