Statement Regarding Wrongful Death Coverage

The Fayette County News recently published an article regarding a civil case of wrongful death involving Mr. Dickey Denney that went to a jury trial on Aug 16, 2021. The article updated citizens on the case, as the initial suit stemmed from a 2009 filing. The trial has now concluded, and the Fayette County News will continue to update citizens on the results, including testimony within the trial. The family of Mr. Denney strongly denies a statement made during the trial by Dr. Gerald Gowitt and reported by The Fayette County News. When testifying, Gowitt was asked what he concluded in his autopsy as the cause of death. Gowitt responded by saying, “He [Mr. Denney] died as a result of opiate intoxication aggravating his previous condition,” All statements made in court are a matter of public record and are attributed to the individual making that statement. The Fayette County News assumes no liability for reporting public comments and makes no judgment as to the validity of said comments. We will continue to monitor this case for further development and report on it accordingly.
