Sheriff’s investigators looking for Wednesday bank robber

Fayette County Sheriff’s Office investigators are looking for a suspect in the Wednesday afternoon armed robbery of the Fidelity Bank located at the corner of Hwy. 54 West and Norton Road, not far from Piedmont Fayette Hospital.

According to Public Information Officer Allen Stevens, the incident took place at 2:33 p.m. when a man entered the bank, approached a teller, and gave them a note demanding money. The suspect reportedly brandished a black handgun that appeared to be a semi-automatic model.

Stevens said there were no injuries and the suspect did get away with an undisclosed amount of money.

The suspect is said to be a black male around six feet tall, perhaps weighing about 220 pounds. He was said to be wearing white shoes and a black warm-up suit with white pin stripes on the legs and shoulders. He was also said to be wearing a green, perhaps camouflage, baseball cap.

Stevens said employees saw the suspect roll away in a white Ford van, which may have been an Econoline model. The front passenger window glass was reportedly broken out, and piece of plastic was taped in its place.

That van was seen turning right onto Norton Road out of the bank parking lot, but Stevens said they are not sure what direction the van took once it reached the Hwy. 54 intersection, which lines up with Old Sandy Creek Road.
