Sandy Creek High School’s own Jabari Smith Jr. is a first-round NBA draft pick.

Smith was drafted on Thursday night, third overall in the first round by the Houston Rockets.

After finishing his high school career at Sandy Creek, Smith chose to play college ball with the Auburn Tigers basketball program, where he earned the SEC Freshman of the Year honor after his first season.

Smith had been named a potential top pick after declaring for the draft in April. Many experts had him at least in the top three selection.

The Fayette County News reached out to Smith but had not heard back by press time. We expect to have a full recap of Smith’s selection in the print edition next Wednesday.
