Peachtree City Police said a shady pine straw operation recently attempted to charge $8,400 for the work shown in the photo above.

The Peachtree City Police Department wants residents to know that some pine straw vendors have been scamming residents by charging extremely high rates to lay pine straw.

In one instance, the department responded to a home where a pine straw company had been working for two days. They found the homeowners had been charged $8,400 for materials and the two days labor on a lot that was at most a half-acre.

“For $8,400, you could probably replace your front yard.¬†Does this picture look like $8,400 in pine straw?” it said in the release from Lt. Mark Brown

Apparently, these shady operations offer a low price per bale at around $3.50 to $4 in order to persuade homeowners, then they charge for more bales than they actually used.

Brown said a price under $4 per bale is “ridiculous because the stuff costs $3 per bale wholesale.”

He suggested homeowners agree on cost up front and “record it if possible.”

He also suggested homeowners call 911 if the sellers are “demanding, threatening, or suspicious.”
