Oaks Assisted Living in Fayetteville Christens new wheelchair accessible van

Oaks assisted living facility takes residents for a test ride after christening their new van.

Oaks assisted living in Fayetteville, Georgia, christened a new, fully equipped van on April 1.

Dubbed “Oakland,” the new van can seat 15 passengers and has a fully operational wheelchair lift that will allow residents of the facility to take trips around town.

Lisa Jackson, the facility’s community relations director, said the four-wheel addition would allow for the seniors to get out more often, something that wasn’t possible during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Van for [the seniors] depicted freedom, hope, and a new beginning …. A brand new shiny, fresh new vehicle to start new journeys.

Resident and New York Native Dina Sellito said the new van would provide much-needed transportation for members of the facility who are unable to drive.

“The van is wonderful. Being able to get out and go to doctors’ appointments that’s what’s important.” Sellito said.

Oaks had a van for several years, but due to costly repairs and a malfunctioning wheelchair lift, it has sat by the wayside.

Teresa Wood, who has been a resident for 11 years and formerly worked for the CIA, touched on her time at Oaks and the care she has received.

“I’ve been very content here. After my stroke, I couldn’t live alone. I am very happy here. The staff is good, and the food is wonderful.” Wood said.

She also touched on her appreciation for the facility’s new van.

“Well, we didn’t have a van for a year. So, we were lucky to get a brand new one.” Wood said of the new van the facility received.

The new van was named Oakland after receiving the most votes from residents at the facility.
