When Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School returns from the holiday break, there won’t be a familiar face there for the first time. Betsy Smith is retiring, but she will always be a much-loved part of the Mercy family.
Smith, or “Miss Betsy” for all those that love her, has been a Bobcat since before the doors to the school even opened. She was the very first Mercy employee, hired in July 2000. Ever since, she’s been the first smiling face anyone sees when they come into the front office.
She was sent off into retirement with a party attended by Mercy colleagues, both current and former, alumni, and parents who had been touched by her presence.
Though she won’t be working the front office anymore (lending lunch money or making a cameo in the theater productions or helping complete school uniforms for forgetful students and on and on), “Miss Betsy” will always be at the heart of Our Lady of Mercy.
