Investigators looking for driver in fatal hit and run crash

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is asking for public’s help in locating a driver involved in a fatal hit and run crash Saturday morning. Actions of one driver may have led to the death of Stephenson C. Mitchell of Jonesboro.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, around 11 a.m. Saturday, three vehicles were traveling southbound on Ga. 85 approaching the area near Fun Junction. A red Ford Ranger truck was in the front in the right-hand lane, with a black Lexus behind. The Lexus got in the left lane to pass the Ranger, at which point they noticed a black Mercedes SUV coming up behind them. The Mercedes drove through the turn lane and gore attempting to pass the Lexus, and the driver of the Lexus swerved to the right to avoid him, sending him sliding into the right-hand lane. The Ranger struck the Lexus and left the roadway, hitting the guardrail and flipping before coming to rest upright.

The driver of the Ford Ranger, Stephenson C. Mitchell, 67, was initially taken to Piedmont Fayette before being airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center where he died Sunday. The driver of the Lexus was uninjured.

The Sheriff’s Office is looking to speak with the driver of the Mercedes who fled the scene and is asking for the public’s help.
“We need to find that vehicle,” said Sheriff Barry Babb.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call Investigator Purkey at 770-716-4837.
