Fayette County

Huge state playoff matchups loom in volleyball, softball

The quest for the volleyball state championship gets really interesting right now. The Final Four will have a distinctly Fayette flavor as Whitewater hosts McIntosh tonight.
As thrilling as the season has been to this point, it only makes sense that the foes will meet again. McIntosh ended Whitewater’s flawless region mark late in the regular season, then bested the Cats again early in the region tourney. Whitewater responded with sweet revenge to win the region. In the last regular season rankings by Score Atlanta, Whitewater was ranked number two in AAAAA, and McIntosh was ranked third.
The match is set for 6 p.m. tonight at Whitewater. The victor will play the winner of Buford-Ola for the state title Saturday at Marietta High School.

Down in Columbus, two teams will be battling it out among the final eight in the state softball tournament. Starr’s Mill opens up at 2 p.m. Thursday against Buford. Whitewater opens at 4 p.m. versus Walnut Grove. In Score Atlanta’s last ranking, Walnut Grove was ranked number one, Buford number two, Whitewater number four, and Starr’s Mill number 10.
