At their Jan. 17 meeting, the Fayetteville City Council approved tweaks to the Pinewood Forest development agreement.

The key changes made to the agreement allow for an event center and the use of accessory dwelling units for rental.

The indoor/outdoor event center would be a space open for public rental for meetings, baby and bridal showers, birthday parties, wedding receptions, and other events.

The approval also allows for residential accessory dwelling units to be offered as rentals. The agreement does maintain a maximum of 100 such accessory units throughout the development.

At the work session earlier this month, City Manager Ray Gibson expressed optimism that it could help with affordable housing options, especially for people who may be coming to work on movie sets and want arrangements more stable than an extended stay hotel or Airbnb.

“I think it helps address the workforce housing issue,” he said.

At the same work session, the list of changes led to questions over the sidewalk in front of the Piedmont Fayette Wellness Center and if it could encroach into the Right of Way along Veterans Parkway.

According to Senior Planner Julie Brown, that issue was resolved in a meeting with city staff. The update will see a five-foot concrete sidewalk installed on the stretch, instead of the proposed slate sidewalk, which would be code-compliant and needs no further approval.
