Fayette track and field coaches have one week circled on their schedule, and it doesn’t include the first day of practice.

No, these coaches don’t worry about the genesis of the season. They are more worried about the finale, in which their teams are measured by hard work and dedication. It is the finale that keeps them up at night. It is the pursuit of an elusive title that lingers in their player’s dreams.

This week, all worlds collided as every Fayette team descended on the ultimate battlefield known as the Region Championships.

Region 3-AAAAA got the week started with Fayette, McIntosh, Whitewater, and Starr’s Mill fighting for the region crown against Griffin, Riverdale, and Morrow.

The Tigers dominate the sprint events and eyed a sweep, but Starr’s Mill wanted to change that narrative on Wednesday. The Panthers hosted the region championships and didn’t disappoint in front of the home crowd.

Starr’s Mill took home the boys championship with 116 points over 16 events.  They finished a couple points of the Fayette boys. The Tigers got their revenge as the Lady Tigers took home the girls’ championship. McIntosh and Whitewater finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the team standings.

Landmark and Our Lady of Mercy also got in on the action from the Region 5 Area 3 Private Championships. Landmark picked up some victories along the way as Donovan Pickett won the boys 400m dash and Zack Truitt won the boys 3200m run.

On the girls’ side, OLM’s Erthaly Thomas won the 400m dash, and Landmark’s Erin Fegans won the 3200m run, and Elizabeth Gibbs won the triple jump and discus throw.

Sandy Creek also competed in the Region 5-AAAA championship. The final results are still being tabulated at this time.

Each school will have a couple weeks to prepare for the State Sectionals and Championships.
