While Peachtree City Police were still withholding the driver’s name Thursday afternoon, they did say the man who shot and killed himself during a routine pullover late yesterday afternoon was a 31-year-old Fayette County man.

According to Lieutenant Mark Brown, the incident took place around 5:20 p.m. in the southbound left turn lane of Hwy. 74 at the Hwy. 54 intersection.

“During the traffic stop, the driver, who was still seated in his vehicle, suddenly produced a handgun and intentionally shot himself,” Brown posted on the department’s Facebook page. “This self-inflicted gunshot resulted in the death of the driver at the scene.”

During a telephone interview Wednesday night, Brown said the officer was not physically harmed during the incident, and he said the department is looking after the officer’s emotional well-being.

“The officer is doing great,” Brown said.
