A long-sought safety solution is coming to the Starr’s Mill school complex as the county and Peachtree City have the framework in place for an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA).

The IGA outlines cart path projects on Redwine Road around the border between Peachtree City and unincorporated county, with the key feature a tunnel for safe crossing for golf carts. The tunnel will allow carts to cross under the road from Robinson Road to Redwine Road on the same side of the street as the school complex. Currently, they have to cross on the road itself leaving golf carts heading to school particularly vulnerable.

Along with a tunnel, a bridge and an at-grade crossing were considered, but it was determined that a tunnel was both the safest and cheapest option.

Public Works Director Phil Mallon noted that the Board of Education is both supportive of a tunnel as the safety solution and Redwine Road as the location.

The total cost of the project is roughly $3 million, with federal funding covering about 80 percent of the construction costs at around $2 million. Future maintenance will be the responsibility of the county or Peachtree City, depending on where that piece of the path is.

The county approved the IGA unanimously. Now, it will go before the city council of Peachtree City for a vote before it can be ratified.
