Fayette County Elections & Voter Registration Department Head Tom Sawyer has been terminated for performance-related issues, according to county and elections board officials.
County Administrator Steve Rapson and Elections Board Chairman Darryl Hicks confirmed Sawyer was officially let go after an elections board specially-called meeting late Tuesday afternoon.
“It was effective immediately,” Hicks said. “It was a performance issue. Not living up to the performance requirements we set out.”
Rapson noted that Sawyer had been given a negative performance review last year and another one earlier this year.
Hicks said the board, which also includes Addison Lester and Aaron Wright, is aiming to appoint an interim replacement and then to begin the hiring process to find a permanent replacement. In the meantime, the July 26 Primary Runoff election will be handled by Elections Office staff, whom Rapson and Hicks both say are well capable of the challenge.
