In a deviation from typical rezoning requests, the County Board of Commissioners approved the plan for a small farm at Thursday night’s meeting.

Patricia Nolde and Danny Dougherty, Jr. asked the commissioners to rezone 6.833 acres fronting on Lester Road and Red Fox Run for agricultural use.

The goal is to start a small vegetable farm using organic practices. Nolde plans to retire from her job at Georgia State in a few years, and she is fully committed to becoming a full-time farmer. With the new zoning, she will also be eligible for USDA programs for both small farms and women farmers.

Commissioner Eric Maxwell applauded the refreshing change of pace. Normally they see requests for more residential development, but Nolde’s request is the opposite.

“You’re doing something that is completely different from what we normally get. We get the other way around,” he said. “Congratulations. Thank you for doing something like that.”

The rezoning request passed unanimously.
