MLB’s Goodrum hosting F’ville school supply event Jan. 5

It’s been a magical year for Detroit Tigers infielder and Fayette County High School alum Niko Goodrum, and he wants to celebrate with his local fans.

This season, Goodrum spent his first full season in the Major Leagues and shined with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs. He also played in historic stadiums and signed his name inside the iconic Green Monster at Fenway Park.

However, Goodrum’s fondest memory wasn’t on the baseball field. It was giving back to the communities that showed him so much support.

High-speed chase leads to officer involved shooting in Fayetteville

A vehicle pursuit led to an officer-involved shooting near Banks Road and GA Highway 85 on Friday night.

A suspect, identified as 36-year-old Rodriguez Kemp of Stone Mountain GA, was apprehended after a fleeing a routine traffic stop in Meriwether County.  At 9:15 p.m., Kemp led officers on a high-speed chase down GA Highway 85 into Coweta County and later into Fayette County.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) press release, the Fayetteville Police Department and the Fayette Sheriff Office were able to slow down Kemp using a multitude of tactics.

Whitewater’s dynamic duo makes history

On December 1, Whitewater seniors Courtney Smith and Jada Claude made history at the Queens of the Hardwood Showcase.

In front of their home faithful and among a host of elite teams and players, the dynamic duo each eclipsed 1,000 career points against Douglas County High School. They joined former star and current assistant coach Jada Coggins as the only Lady Wildcats to reach (more…)

Introducing the 2018 All-County Football Team

As the 2018 football season heads into the twilight, it’s time to reflect on those who made the campaign memorable.

There were a lot of highlights and career-defining moments this season. Starr’s Mill won their third straight Region 3-AAAAA title and earned a top spot in the state playoffs. Sandy Creek won seven games and returned to the playoffs after a hiatus last season.

Several teams weren’t as lucky. McIntosh, Whitewater, Fayette County, and Our Lady of Mercy had tough seasons and missed the playoffs. Each team dealt with injuries and inexperience at key positions. However, each team built momentum (more…)

Sandy Creek earns home split against East Coweta

After a 10-day break, the Sandy Creek Patriots returned to action against an elite East Coweta Indians team. Both squads entered on a hot streak, but it was the Indians that walked away with a 68-62 road victory.

The Indians improved to 10-1 overall and finished undefeated on their tour against Fayette County teams. East Coweta senior guard Fermandez Jones led the way with 17 points. Jones was electric off the dribble and made his living at the rim. He also set up teammates Brandon Stroud and Zac Hill on the perimeter and in transition.

Introducing the 2018 All-County Volleyball Team

The road to Georgia volleyball supremacy ran through Fayette County again this season. Five teams made the playoffs with McIntosh, Starr’s Mill and Whitewater all making the Final Four in Class AAAAA.

McIntosh and Starr’s Mill renewed their rivalry in the state title game. The championship edition of the Battle of the Bubble series went to the Chiefs as they won back-to-back titles. It was McIntosh’s fourth state title in program history.

Fayette gets road sweep over McIntosh

Fayette County continued its run through Region 3-AAAAA with a 55-53 win over the McIntosh Chiefs on Saturday night. The Tigers won their seventh consecutive game as they outlasted the Chiefs late comeback attempt.

Junior guard JeKobe Coleman led the Tigers with 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. He was instrumental down the stretch, connecting on three 3-pointers, to help push Fayette into the winner’s circle. Sophomore Will Richard also chipped in 13 points as the Tigers improved to 7-1 overall and stayed undefeated in region play.

Starr’s Mill earns road victories against Whitewater

The Starr’s Mill Lady Panthers have found their offensive rhythm. On Friday night, the Panthers showcased their perimeter acumen, including 6 3-pointers, to prevail 64-60 over the Whitewater Lady Wildcats.

Panthers’ guard Alice Anne Hudson lead the way with 25 points. She started off hot, hitting back-to-back threes, to give Starr’s Mill an early edge. Teammates Jaclyn Hester (14 points) and Ashtyn Lally (10 points) sustained the momentum late to secure the victory.

Starr’s Mill has won three out of their last four games. The Panthers improved to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in region play.

Bama Boys: Coaches share bond deeper than basketball

Eighteen years ago, Starr’s Mill head coach Charlemagne Gibbons was just looking for a helping hand. After an impressive basketball career as player, Gibbons was searching for an opportunity to stay connected to the game he loved.

Then, he received a phone call.

On the other line, was a good friend that wanted Gibbons to check out his basketball team at Stanhope Elmore High School in Alabama. The team was preparing for the upcoming season and Gibbons was asked to work out some players.

Starr’s Mill sweeps Battle of the Bubble round one

 

Starr’s Mill head coach Charlemagne Gibbons described his halftime speech to his team as a “Coming to Jesus” moment. He wasn’t pleased with the effort the Panthers gave in the first half of Tuesday’s rivalry game against McIntosh.

The Panthers sauntered into halftime tied at 28 with the Chiefs. Gibbons wasn’t happy his team played too relaxed. He noticed the aggressive mentality wasn’t there from the jump and he let his players hear about it in the locker room.
