Peachtree City Police have made an arrest in connection with a fatal hit and run. On Monday, Elaina Marie Montelongo, 24, of Newnan was arrested and charged with Hit and Run, a felony, in the death of 17-year-old Christopher Jordan Babilonia of Peachtree City.
According to Lt. Odilia Bergh, officers responded to a report of a suspicious person in the roadway on Hwy. 74 around 11:20 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13. Once on the scene at Hwy. 74 southbound just north of Paschal Road, they found Babilonia laying in the roadway with severe injuries indicating he had been hit by a vehicle. Babilonia was rushed to Fayette Piedmont Hospital where the McIntosh High School student passed shortly after arrival.
According to the arrest warrant obtained by 11Alive, Montelongo was denied bail because she is considered homeless and a flight risk. She was driving a 2002 Ford Focus station wagon that belonged to a friend when she allegedly struck Babilonia, who was in the roadway, and fled without attempting to help or call the police.
Police believe Babilonia was first involved in a golf cart crash near the roadway, pointing to tire tracks veering towards a retaining wall and into the woods, though the cart did not show significant damage.
“The young man was involved in a golf cart accident in the area. He sustained severe injuries from the accident, but we don’t know how he ended up in the road,” Berg told 11Alive.
In a release announcing the arrest, police noted that the investigation was aided by the community, and said additional charges may be pending.
