Young reader hits major milestone

There are fast starts, and then there is the kind of start Sharia Richelle Baker is off to. Sharia was recently honored for completing the daunting “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” program.

Just five years old, Sharia is a voracious reader. She visits the Fayette County Public Library at least twice a month, and her family encourages her to read at least two books a day after school, and she is read a bedtime story every night.

A kindergartener at Landmark Christian School, Sharia also loves the Sing and Play program at the library led by Children’s Librarian Ada Demlow.

She was recognized by the county for completing the program over the summer.

“Thank you for this honor,” said Sharia. “I love to read, and I love the Fayette County Library.”

Leading up to the county commissioner’s meeting where she was to be honored, Sharia asked her family, “Am I famous?”

With her drive to achieve, she surely will be famous someday.
