The McIntosh Lady Chiefs continued their push for another playoff run with a come-from-behind 9-6 win over Starr’s Mill on Friday night.
“I’m just really proud of our effort because Starr’s Mill has a great team,” said McIntosh coach Sara Knight. “I’m proud of our girls for coming out and defending our home. It’s always a big win when we can beat Starr’s Mill.”
Starr’s Mill grabbed control early on, but the Chiefs were undeterred. They pulled away late even though they wouldn’t lead until the second half.
“We didn’t quit,” said Knight. “We had some great individual efforts, but I think as a team we really came together.”
On each end of the field, the Chiefs had a key performer. Defensively, Samantha Coffey drew the unenviable task of having to guard Starr’s Mill’s Alyssa Sack in the second half. Coffey responded beautifully. Offensively, Imani Hedgemann attacked endlessly, racking up three goals.
“Samantha Coffey did a great job. We made that change in the second half, and I think it really changed the momentum,” said Knight. “Imani had a really great effort scoring goals for us.”
The Panthers did the early scoring, jumping out to a 3-0 lead on two tallies from Alyssa Sack and one from Mary Ellis Goins. Their keeper, Madeline Scheinost, did a great job all night against a strong Chief attack.
McIntosh responded with three straight scores, starting with Hedgemann at 16:25 left in the first half. Jalen Knight and Madeline Sy followed to make it a 3-3 tie.
Goins struck again for Starr’s Mill, but Marie Ogletree added her own to pull McIntosh back into a 4-4 tie that would hold into halftime.
Knight gave McIntosh their first lead early in the second half. In quick succession, Sack scored, Hedgemann followed, and then Starr’s Mill’s Emery Mitchell got her first for a 6-6 tie with 17:02 left in the match.
Chief keeper Jordan Crutchfield locked in and would not allow a goal for the remainder of the match. Hedgemann scored again to put her team in front to stay. Kyle Bednarick and Knight each added a little more cushion in the McIntosh win.
