Thanks to community alertness and vigilant police work, a local man is under arrest in connection with a shooting Wednesday afternoon.
George Bernard Timmons, 58 years old of Fayetteville, is charged with shooting his ex-wife in a domestic dispute at a residence on Covered Bridge Way in the north end of the county around 5:30 p.m. on October 3.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, earlier in the day on Oct. 3, Timmons was served with eviction papers at the residence as the result of a court order. That afternoon, Timmons’s ex-wife returned to the home with family members. While they were parked in the driveway, Timmons came out from behind the house and walked up to the car, looked inside, saw his ex-wife, and pulled out a hand gun. He fired multiple rounds into the car, with one bullet striking his ex-wife in the arm. She had non-life-threatening injuries from the bullet.
Before deputies arrived on the scene, Timmons had fled on a bicycle. Officers canvassed the area and sent out information to the area and shared posts on the Nextdoor app about the incident.
The next morning, around 7:20 a.m., an alert motorist who had seen the Nextdoor posts called 911 and reported seeing a black male dressed in all black riding a bicycle on Kite Lake Trail.
Deputies were already in the vicinity, and had been throughout the night searching, and were able to quickly respond, taking Timmons into custody without incident.
Timmons has been charged with aggravated assault.
