High-speed chase leads to officer involved shooting in Fayetteville

A vehicle pursuit led to an officer-involved shooting near Banks Road and GA Highway 85 on Friday night.

A suspect, identified as 36-year-old Rodriguez Kemp of Stone Mountain GA, was apprehended after a fleeing a routine traffic stop in Meriwether County.  At 9:15 p.m., Kemp led officers on a high-speed chase down GA Highway 85 into Coweta County and later into Fayette County.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) press release, the Fayetteville Police Department and the Fayette Sheriff Office were able to slow down Kemp using a multitude of tactics.

“A Fayetteville Police Department officer deployed “stop-sticks” in an attempt to stop or slow the vehicle,” the press release said. “The tires on Kemp’s vehicle were punctured, but Kemp continued to flee from officers.”

The chase continued for a few more minutes down GA Highway 85.

“Nearing the intersection of Banks Road and GA Highway 85, a Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputy performed a PIT maneuver on Kemp’s vehicle,” the press release said. “This maneuver was successful in stopping Kemp’s vehicle.”

Once the officers were engaged, Kemp opened fire with a shotgun. The officers fired back, hitting Kemp multiple times. They rendered aid to Kemp and he was sent Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and is listed in critical condition.

No officers were hurt at the scene.

The GBI is still conducting an individual investigation into the matter. The entire incident stemmed from the traffic stop and the suspect fleeing upon seeing a Meriwether County Sheriff Deputy’s lights and siren flash.

Three county police departments were involved in the chase. More information will be available when it comes in.
