Walk with a Doc, one of Piedmont Fayette Hospital’s most successful community programs, returns on Saturday, March 16. The event brings the community together for a leisurely, two-mile stroll in Peachtree City and brings a doctor along to answer any health-related questions that the walk participants might have. Walk with a Doc is a healthy way to kick off the weekend and a great way for the community to come together for an hour and focus on wellness.
Annie Morrissey, M.D. will be the doctor for this first event of the season. Dr. Morrissey is an endocrinologist, specializing in the diagnosis and management of adults with disorders such as diabetes, osteoporosis, hormonal issues and disorders of the thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, and calcium/parathyroid glands.
“I’m honored to lead the first Walk with a Doc of 2019 and I’m looking forward to talking about the importance of preventive medicine, particularly as it relates to preventing diabetes and damage from osteoporosis,” said Dr. Morrissey. “Exercise and a proper diet are key to preventing or managing those diseases.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 30 million Americans have diabetes. The American Diabetes Association states that over one million people in Georgia, 14 percent of the adult population of the state, have diabetes, and another three million people, 36 percent of the adult population, have prediabetes, which means having blood glucose levels higher than normal. All told, 50 percent of all adults in Georgia are either diabetic or prediabetic. Complications from diabetes include heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and amputation.
“It’s never too late for people to take control of their health, but it is important for them to take the first steps,” said Dr. Morrissey. “That means educating themselves and starting to exercise regularly.”
Walk with a Doc starts at the Peachtree City Farmers Market at Aberdeen Village and goes to Battery Park and back (approximately 40 minutes). Pre-registration for the event is encouraged.
