A Tuesday evening “town hall” meeting has been scheduled at Fayetteville City Hall so residents, and especially those living on the east side of the city, can learn more about upcoming development in that area, and so city leaders can hear any concerns and other input residents may have.
In recent weeks, a new Dollar General store has been approved for construction on the northwest corner of Hwy. 54 West and Weatherly Drive, and a couple of Weatherly subdivision residents attending the Aug. 18 Fayetteville City Council meeting said they and their neighbors are concerned about the traffic impact the new store will have on the area. In particular, they said they don’t like the idea of having the entrance on Weatherly Drive instead of on the highway.
According to city staff, the Georgia Department of Transportation won’t allow a curb cut on the highway frontage at the Dollar General property because it would be less than 400 feet from the existing curb cuts at Weatherly Drive and at the former Ace Hardware store.
During that city council meeting, City Manager Ray Gibson suggested a town hall meeting be organized so Weatherly residents and any others in the area could better engage with the city as it handles more development requests in that area.
City Planner Julie Brown said the Dollar General store is the first new retail development on the east side in a while, but she said more is likely to come soon.
Brown also noted that the Dollar General being planned on Hwy. 54 East will look similar to the one built a couple of years ago on Banks Road near the Hwy. 85 intersection. It will feature brick on all sides and have stucco accents.
Tuesday’s meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. at Fayetteville City Hall in the council chambers.
